The PGA TOUR and LPGA TOUR have joined together to compete in an exciting new mixed-team event: The Grant Thornton Invitational.

The first mixed tour event in decades: The Grant Thornton Invitational will kick off December 4, 2023, at Tiburon Golf Club & the Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburon, Florida.

The field will consist of 16 LPGA and 16 PGA TOUR players. They will compete together in a new tournament format for equal prizes of $4 million. This three-day tournament will have nine hours of coverage on the Golf Channel and NBC.

Mixed teams are not a new idea for the PGA and LPGA. The JCPenny Classic was played in Florida and California from 1960 to 1999. The last format played was a mix of best ball and alternate shot. John Daly and Laura Davies won the last JCPenney Classic at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida, in 1999.

Other world tours have recently had official mixed competitions, too. In Australia, men and women compete in a mixed event on the same course at the same time, with equal purses, but in separate competitions. In Europe, men and women play in a tournament from different tees.

The format of the new Grant Thornton Invitational has yet to be announced.

LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan further promises “a memorable and entertaining experience for all golf fans... A best-in-class event that inspires, elevates, and advances opportunities for golfers around the globe.” She further goes on to note, “This is an important step forward for golf, women’s golf, and the LPGA.” (SOURCE: https://grantthorntoninvitational.com/#pr)

The Grant Thornton Invitational will support CureSearch for Children’s Cancer as well as other charities.

Two teams, Tony Finau and Nelly Korda, and Jessica Korda and Rickie Fowler, have already committed to play in this new event.

Women’s Golf Project fans are hoping Brooke Henderson will play in this inaugural event.

A mixed event of this calibre will surely be exciting for golf fans of all varieties/
